okay so how much should a used gps handheld cost and how much should it cost if its an older model like made in the years of 1999-2006 and also hows the garmin etrex h vs. a magellan sportrak? what are good handheld cheap and great for hunting and rod vavigation? im talking all gps systems but more so on the handhelds. what should i really look for if i want my moneys worth?

If you know the model number, you can go to Crutchfield's "CExchange" (Trade in Your Gear) and have it appraised. For example, I have a Garmin "Quest" with the original box, manual, both 120VAC and 12VDC adapters, and the windshield mount (all of the accessories it came with). It's in working condition with the original MapSource maps. It was appraised for $29.49. I paid $329 for it in early 2005. Needless to say, it's still in the closet.

Whichever one you get, make sure there are "topo" maps available and that it has a "walking" setting.

Lowrance and Garmin both made some good handhelds. Magellan seemed to specialize more in units for cars. You might also want to look for one that has replaceable batteries. Continuous use with rechargeable batteries will run it down too quick, and you may not be near a source to charge them. And you can always carry a couple of extra sets of "double a's".

I heard that the early (monochrome) Garmins did not receive as well as the Magellans of the same era. I had an early Vista and had some signal drop out issues when under tree cover or if I didn't carry it high on my body (your body blocks the signal). This was not a blockage to where you would be lost but gaps in the track it was making and you might have to stop and wait 30 seconds to get a good reading.
I have heard that the receiver in the C series was much improved. I now have an HCX and the receiver is a HUGE improvement. I can get an iffy fix inside many buildings. Even carrying the GPS low on my body (pants pocket or waist pack), I get accuracy within 30 ft and no dropouts in wooded areas.

The other things to watch for are:

The interface. All but the cheapest of the new Garmins use a USB port instead of a serial port. The USB port requires you to install a driver on the computer to communicate with the GPS but many computers no longer have serial ports.

MicroSD cards expand the map memory (the newer maps take more space) on the x models. In addition to the expanded map memory, the x models can save a copy of the track data to the memory card in a GPX (universal GPS file) and Garmin's software can transfer maps directly to the card without the USB driver installed on the computer.
