I have a Palm Treo 650 through Cingular. I saw that you can get GPS navigation installed on it, but I was curious as to the reliability and ease of use of this software and equipment. Tell me your experiences.

I tried the TOTOM on my T650 but it is a sorry peice of outdated maps even with their latest updates it cannot direct me to proper locations that have been around for more than 4 years.. or street addresses that have been renamed ten years ago..

Garmin will have a new system for smartphones called Mobile 2.0 we are waiting for it since Garmin had a good stable system with their iQue systems on Palm OS.

Street Atlas/Delorme are just a useless unhelpful systems on the treo but acceptable for a laptop navigation..

It is your opinion. Best answer goes to the person who explains why the best.

I would suggest the following: Garmin eTrex Legend HCx, Garmin GPSmap 76Cx, or the GPSmap 60Cx.

Those units have a color screen, can use a microSD card to expand the memory to hold more maps, and can be used for turn-by-turn directions. They can also take advantage of Garmin's POI Loader program. You can use it to load geocaches on the GPS receiver along with all or part of the description as well as use icons that mimic those on the geocaching website. Instructions for how to do that can be found on the Groundspeak GPS forum, which is run by the same company that runs geocaching.com.

The Garmin Colorado can show all the info about the geocache that you see on the website, but it is a very buggy unit. Its Rock-n-Roller wheel makes entering info tedious. The Garmin Oregon has the same paperless geocaching capability, a touchscreen, and is less buggy, but its screen is very difficult to see in the sunlight. The 60Cx and 76Cx are known for having bright readable screens. Those models plus the Legend HCx have been around for a while and are very reliable.

No matter what you get, make sure the GPS receiver can be connected to the computer. This makes it easier to send geocache data to the unit. You will get tired of entering things manually. Also stay away from Magellans. They look good on paper, but their quality has really gone downhill. The Tritons are buggy, crash, and lack features that are commonly found in other units that have been out for a while. Magellan's technical support is off-shored and they only read scripts, so they are usually not much help, even though they are polite.
